Does your longing for a good tan
tempt you to ignore the danger of the ultra-violet rays? Doesn't that tee shirt over your
swimsuit act as armor against the damaging sun's rays by the pool? Are all those freckles
a danger sign for skin cancer?
Ignorance of protecting yourself from skin cancer can be extremely harmful.
Keep informed of the danger of this disease. There are three types of skin cancer; one of
which, melanoma, caused almost 7,000 deaths last year. This is for the most part curable
if treated in the early stages. During the summer, it is important
to
take extra precaution with the hot months ahead. The most common cause of skin cancer is
overexposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays. Unwise exposure to the sun can cause harmful
sunburn, brown spots, premature wrinkles and skin sagging. Your tan may fade but your skin
never forgets the assaulting rays.
Skin Factors to Consider
| When you garden, wear sunscreen, a hat and long sleeves | |
| Ladies wear sunscreen underneath your sun protective facial
foundation |
|
| Listen for the UV Index forecasts on the radio before going
out into the sun. The UV index forecasts the intensity of ultraviolet light exposure you
can expect each day, ranking it from 0 to 15 |
|
| Regardless of your skin type, the higher the SPF the better. Use at least No. 15 as specified by the American Academy of Dermatology as well as Edward M. Jackson, Ph.D., a toxicologist and sunscreen researcher | |
| Watch existing moles for changes in their appearance and keep
an eye out for new ones |
|
| Freckles and liver spots can be considered as friendly warnings. People with freckles usually have more sensitive skins and burn more easily. Liver spots indicate aged skin and sustained damage from the sun | |
| Watch for suspicious looking brown spots with irregular
borders or color variegations |
|
| If you're allergic to sunscreen, use gel-type sunscreen (usually water-based). Alcohol-free and oil-free sunscreens are your best bet | |
| Wear shades for your eyes and make sure they specify the
amount of ultraviolet light they absorb (99 to 100% is preferable). When buying shades
look for the words absorption and blockage instead of protection. |
|
| Tanning salons are not a safe solution to a tan. They use mostly UVA ultraviolet light that tans without burning. It is known that UVA rays penetrate the skin a bit more than UVB rays. This ultraviolet light ages the skin and causes deeper damage that can ultimately lead to cancer | |
| Finally, if you must get a tan, remember that ultraviolet
rays are least harmful in the early morning and late afternoon. But whatever your choice
is, please remember to apply your sunscreen several times during the course of the day |
Enjoy a Healthy Summer!
