Treatment - Cognitive

Choice of treatment when the depression is: less severe, less chronic, non-psychotic, prior positive response, medical contraindication to medication, patient preference or when patient may require a directive technique. Need to be motivated and cognitively intact (have ability to learn) to actively participate in the therapy, (often used in conjuction with medication).
Duration is usually time limited and is individualized to the severity of the person’s system errors.
The person is encouraged to recognize the interaction between thinking and feeling (he feels what he thinks and he thinks the way he feels).
The negative triad is discussed and the system errors (overgeneralization, all-or-none thinking) are addressed (learn healthy ways of thinking and feeling).
"Life review" (Butler, 1963) is another therapeutic technique to overcome negative attitudes, or to help those who devalue their lives.
