Treatment Phases

Acute treatment (6-12 weeks)

Sometimes this includes hospitalization, to provide structure, safety and to observe for side effects if new medication is started. Goal is for symptom relief, or remission.

Continuation treatment (4-9 months)

Medication, at full therapeutic dosage is recommended. Will most likely need to see psychiatrist, psychotherapist, day treatment, partial hospitalization program or a combination. Goal is to prevent a relapse.

Maintenance treatment

Continue to see health care providers as needed to fill prescriptions, receive support, psychotherapy as needed. Goal is to prevent recurrence of depression (symptoms).
